What is Victoria Street Lunar Festival

Held on one Sunday during Jan or Feb. Richmond Lunar New Year Festival will celebrate the commencement of the lunar year.

Up to 8,000 people are expected on site at any one time, and plans have been developed working to this number. Estimates of last year’s event have ranged from 70-90,000 visitors.

The Victoria Street Lunar Festival has become one of the most popular and recognised Lunar New Year celebrations in Victoria, drawing people from all over Melbourne.

The free admittance community event is organised be the Victoria Street Business Association previously known as Richmond Asian Business Association.

The festival is a wonderful opportunity for Victoria Street to treat the community to a vibrant, colourful and culturally rich experience.

The festival will see festival favourites such as the Food Demonstration Stage return to showcase Asian Foods - Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Asian Cocktails plus children activities and over 100 food stalls and restaurants.

Victoria Street will be lined with many food, business, charity and community stalls adding a vibrant and energetic feel to the event. The event is produced by Victoria Street Business Association (VSBA), in partnership with the City of Yarra.

Over the past 20 years VSBA has developed a key cultural event that is so successful, it has outgrown the resources of their organisation. Council are pleased to be able to support this important celebration by adopting the operational responsibility in close partnership with VSBA,who are taking a lead role in ensuring cultural relevance and a strong relationship with the local community.

COY Council is investing unprecedented resources into this event, to ensure its continued growth from solid foundations.

The festival helps to showcase Asian culture and traditions and more importantly the multicultural fabric of City of Yarra. The festival also helps to encourage families and new migrants to participate in social and cultural activities and promote harmony for the community and the society as a whole.

The event attracts visitation from all over Melbourne with 39% of attendees living outside of the City of Yarra.

Each year the event is well accepted by people and residents within and outside City of Yarra, especially for new migrants in the area. 33% of visitors have attended the event more than five times, and a staggering 64% having attended three or more times.
